Dog Beach Rules in the South Bay: What You Need to Know

South Bay Dog Guide Teamยท

Beach access for dogs in the South Bay can be confusing. Each city has its own rules, and they are enforced. Here is everything you need to know to enjoy the beach with your dog without getting a ticket.

Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach has some of the strictest beach rules in the area:

  • Dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time
  • Dogs are allowed on The Strand (paved path) on-leash
  • The grassy areas above the beach at Bruce's Beach allow leashed dogs
  • Fines start at $100 for violations
  • Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is slightly more lenient:

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach before 10 AM and after sunset
  • Dogs must be on-leash at all times on the beach
  • The Strand allows leashed dogs any time
  • Pier Avenue and downtown areas allow leashed dogs on sidewalks
  • Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach offers the most dog-friendly beach access:

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach before 10 AM and after 6 PM (seasonal variations apply)
  • The harbor area near King Harbor is generally dog-friendly on-leash
  • Veterans Park along the Esplanade welcomes leashed dogs all day
  • The Riviera Village area is dog-friendly for sidewalk dining
  • General Tips

  • Always bring bags and clean up after your dog
  • Keep your dog under control โ€” even friendly dogs can be intimidating to beachgoers
  • Bring fresh water โ€” ocean water can make dogs sick
  • Watch for signs of overheating, especially on hot sand
  • Rinse your dog after ocean water exposure to prevent skin irritation
  • Where to Go Instead

If beach access is limited, consider:

  • Manhattan Beach Bark Park for off-leash fun
  • The Strand for a scenic leashed walk along the coast
  • Hermosa Beach Dog Park for sandy play without beach restrictions
  • Know the rules, respect them, and enjoy our beautiful coastline with your best friend.
